NE KY AHEC Awarded Grant for HPV Education

The Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (NE KY AHEC) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the National AHEC Organization’s Training Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address the low rates of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations within its service region.

The project will utilize the NE KY AHEC’s established continuing education division to provide informative sessions about HPV and vaccinations to health care providers and health careers students within Bath, Carter, Elliott, Menifee and Rowan counties through mid-September.

Such a project is desperately needed in this area, as the CDC reports Kentucky is one of only two states in which HPV vaccination coverage among adolescents is less than 50 percent.

“We have had good success in recent years in using continuing education activities to help drive positive changes within the regional health care system, and we anticipate similar results from this HPV project,” said David A. Gross, director of the NE KY AHEC. “We look forward to collaborating with health care facilities and educational institutions within this five-county region to disseminate HPV content to health care providers and health professions students.”
