Preceptors Take Home the Gold at Rio-Themed Preceptor Recognition Celebration

11/15/2016

In the summer of 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, hosted the Summer Olympic Games, where the world’s best athletes compete for international recognition, acclaim, and, of course, a gold medal.   In honor of the Olympic Games, which recognizes outstanding athletes from across the world, the Northeast Kentucky AHEC hosted a Rio de Janeiro Carnival-themed evening to recognize outstanding preceptors at its annual Preceptor Recognition Celebration on Friday, Nov. 11.  While all of the NE KY AHEC’s preceptors are medal- worthy, only a few left with the gold.

The event, held at the Morehead Conference Center, featured authentic Brazilian foods and music.  Professional ballroom dancers Damian and Irina Pataluna from Derby City Ballroom in Louisville entertained guests with a performance and gave everyone a brief samba lesson. Samba, the official dance of Carnival, is a Brazilian dance of African origin that can be danced alone or with a partner.

During Carnival, many participants wear masks and dress in elaborate feathered costumes. In keeping with this spirit, guests were asked to bring a mask, or they had the option to create one at a mask station set up at the event. Participants could then swing by the photo booth for a memento of the night.

Just as the Olympics recognizes exceptional athletes, the Preceptor Recognition Celebration’s purpose is to pay tribute to exceptional preceptors in the region. Dozens of preceptors were honored at the event, with seven receiving awards for outstanding service.

“Clinical rotations have been called ‘the bread and butter’ of what AHECs do,” said David A. Gross, director of the NE KY AHEC. “During the past year we coordinated more than 700 rotations for health professions students and that could not be possible without the cooperation of our region’s clinicians, who remain committed to helping train the next generation of health care providers.”
