Regional Students Accepted to Medical Schools Across the State

5/4/2015

The NE KY AHEC recognized 30 undergraduate students from the region who have been accepted to medical school at the 14th annual “Letters From Home” recognition celebration on April 27 at the Center for Health Education and Research in Morehead. These students will each be attending an in-state medical school this fall.

Letters from Home is an ongoing program at the Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center.  Our hope is to change rural health care by following these medical students and bring them back to practice in the region, thereby decreasing the shortage of physicians in our service area.

“These students are from this area – they grew up here or went to college here and many of them have family here,” said Julie Stephens, student services coordinator for the NE KY AHEC.  “We don’t want them to lose that connection to this region when they go to medical school because we ultimately want them to come back and practice here.”

As part of the Letters From Home program, NE KY AHEC staff members follow students through their medical education by sending information about new and exciting events going on in the region, birthday cards, Northeast KY AHEC newsletter, rotation information, residency information, and any other items that provide ongoing contact from home.  The Northeast KY AHEC also helps these medical students engage in opportunities such as networking and community engagement in our service area. The Northeast KY AHEC helps each LFH participant with getting the rotations they want and providing information to help get them employed within the region.

The current Letters From Home students and community leaders provided insight and advice to the incoming LFH participants to assist them in their medical education. The evening ended with each student being recognized and presented with a resource that will help them in medical school.
