University of Louisville Rural Medicine Summer Externship
The Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center, hosted by St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, is seeking candidates among interested University of Louisville medical students who will successfully complete their first year of medical school in May 2017.
The externship will expose the student to family/community medicine in a rural setting through learning experiences supervised by Dr. Amy Conley, MD, and the Northeast Kentucky AHEC. A maximum of four weeks’ commitment from the student is required.
Dr. Conley is a 1996 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed her residency at UK’s East Kentucky Family Medicine Residency Program in Hazard. She is the site director for the St. Claire/UK Family Medicine Residency Program in Morehead. In 2007 she received the AAFP Pfizer Teacher Development Award, in 2009 she received the Northeast Kentucky AHEC’s Preceptor of the Year Award, and she recently completed a Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship through the Cultural Medicine Training Center.
The successful applicant will develop an appreciation for community service and the contributions that physicians can make to their communities through such service. Among other things, the student will be exposed to:
- Family/Community Medicine
- Weekly didactics with residents and other medical students
- Journal Club meetings
- Chamber of Commerce meetings
- Meetings with local health care leaders
- Hospice/Palliative Care
- Home Health
- Nursing Home
- Free Clinic
- Emergency Medicine
The externship begins on Monday, May 29, and ends Friday, June 23, 2017. Participants will have an $800 stipend for the four-week block, and free housing will be provided if needed. For more information contact Jessica Caudill by email or phone at 606.783.6469.
